Marc Adams Will Speak at PFLAG NYC on Staten Island on October 24

Marc Adams

Marc Adams is the author of nine books including his award-winning autobiography, The Preacher's Son, five collections of poetry, and his most recent book, It’s Not About You: Understanding Coming Out & Self Acceptance. His awards include the Silver Pen Award and Lambda Literary Award.

Marc Adams is also the founder and executive director of HeartStrong, an educational non-profit organization that provides support and outreach to LGBT students from religious educational institutions who are struggling with feeling that they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The HeartStrong Outreach Team has driven over 327,000 miles in the past nine years.

"Growing up the son of a fundamentalist Baptist minister is tough enough. Growing up gay in an environment where your parents, teachers and peers deem evangelical Christians like Jerry Falwell as left wing liberals is an entirely different experience," says Marc, who grew up in such a home. In an effort to save his own life, he decided at age 16 to rebel against his parents and attend Liberty University where he thought he could find a way to change from homosexual to heterosexual. His experience there changed his life and jump-started his journey to self acceptance and personal freedom.
