The school year has just ended and what a year it has been! Thanks to support from so many PFLAG NYC volunteers and supporters, we hit some major milestones with the Safe Schools Program.

Training parent coordinators in District 13

Kalima McKenzie-Simms delivers professional training to parent coordinators in Brooklyn’s Community School District 13.

The Safe Schools Program reached 50% more schools this school year. In real numbers, that means we made 251 presentations reaching almost 8,000 students, parents, and teachers. We’re now helping change the climate for LGBTQ youth in more than 60 schools each year. This has a real impact on young people’s lives. As one teacher at a Harlem school told us, “We still face so much bias. You help us create a safe space by letting students hear real experiences and ask questions they’re uncomfortable talking about anywhere else.”

In May we embarked on a major new collaboration with the NYC Department of Education to train parent coordinators on working with families with LGBTQ kids and supporting family acceptance. In just two months, we trained the parent coordinators in 25% of community school districts citywide! Read more »

On March 11, 1973, a group of parents, along with some of their children and other friends, met at Metropolitan-Duane Methodist Church (now Church of the Village) in Greenwich Village. Approximately 20 people attended. That was the start of PFLAG NYC, and the beginning of the movement of parents and families standing up and speaking out for their LGBT children and all LGBT people.

On May 20, 2018, join with us as we gather at Church of the Village for a celebration of the anniversary. In the company of custodians of our history who were at that very first meeting, along with others who have carried PFLAG NYC into the present day, we will celebrate the continuing work of embracing and supporting the LGBT loved ones in our families and our lives.

Personal stories are the most effective tool that the Safe Schools Program uses to open students’ minds and enlist them in making their schools welcoming and supportive for all. Safe Schools’ community volunteers are the essential part of the presentations we use in hundreds of classrooms every year.

This spring, PFLAG NYC will hold three Volunteer Training Workshops to teach new volunteers how to share their story for the Safe Schools Program, and help existing volunteers take on leadership roles within the program. The workshops will help both new and experienced volunteers shape a personal story to fit a Safe Schools presentation. In the New Volunteer workshops, paticipants will: Read more »

PFLAG NYC has joined with The Center to create a new option for parents, family members, and friends of transgender and gender nonconforming loved ones to come to a TransFamilies Project monthly support group. The new group will meet on the last Tuesday of every month, starting January 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Meetings will take place at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.

Like all TransFamilies Project meetings, the group is open to all. No matter when your loved one disclosed his/her/their gender identity, or what stage of transition he/she/they are in, join with others to meet understanding friends, share information, and get and provide support. Read more »
