Special Talk on LGBT Health at Midtown Meeting on October 14

PFLAG NYC’s Midtown Support Meeting will take place on Sunday, October 14, and will also include the October meeting of the TransParents Project.

Dr. John SteeverDr. John Steever with peer health educators from ASCNYC

Dr. John Steever of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center will speak during the meeting. The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center was the first health service in New York State created specifically to serve adolescents. Over the past 34 years, it has offered high-quality, comprehensive care to teenagers from around the city. Today, the MSAHC stands as the largest program of its kind in the country and as a successful model for other teen-targeted healthcare efforts.

MSAHC has been a leader in providing comprehensive, inclusive care for young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning, and provides critical confidential access to healthcare services for minors. In addition to medical services, MSAHC understand the importance of mental health care for young people in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity. It has a range of support groups for young people, now including a weekly support group for teens who are transgender, gender queer, or gender non-conforming.

Dr. Steever’s talk — Transgender Health Care: An Introduction to Hormones and Beyond — will help all gain a deeper understanding of gender, and time will be allowed for discussion and questions.
