Our History

PFLAG NYC Then

Jeanne Manford was a mom and elementary school teacher who lived in Flushing, Queens. She was a staunch supporter of her son Morty, a gay activist. On June 25, 1972, Jeanne marched in the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade with Morty while carrying a sign that read, “Parents of Gays: Unite in Support for our Children.” In 1973, spurred on by Jeanne, a group of New York City parents founded the predecessor of PFLAG NYC, Parents of Gays, to help their kids live happy, healthy, and safe lives.

PFLAG NYC Now

What Jeanne started then has made a lasting difference. Over 50 years later, PFLAG has more than 550,000 members in over 350 chapters throughout the United States. Today, our mission at PFLAG NYC remains the same: to create a better future for LGBTQ+ youth and adults through a partnership of parents, allies, and LGBTQ+ people. We are so grateful to have been doing this work for 53 years, and we thank every PFLAG NYC member who has been a part of our family along the way.

Advocacy in
New York City
& Beyond

Family support and acceptance are important factors for positive outcomes for LGBTQ+ youth. Our free support groups and support coaching help families stay close and keep relationships strong when a loved one comes out. We also maintain updated lists of digital resources and book recommendations for LGBTQ+ folks and their loved ones, and we connect people with other resources we know about.

Outside the family, school is a pivotal place in the life of a young person. Our Safe Schools Program partners with schools to ensure that LGBTQ+ youth are able to learn in an environment that is affirming, safe, and respectful. Through classroom presentations with trained volunteer speakers and professional development workshops for educators, we are working to create an environment in NYC schools that is free of harassment for all students.

To raise awareness and increase inclusivity, we engage in community outreach and education efforts. We provide free, accessible workshops on topics of interest to our community members and deliver tailored educational programming to businesses and organizations to teach them how to make their spaces safer and more welcoming for LGBTQ+ folks. Learn how we can customize our programming to fit your needs and goals.

Through activism, advocacy, and allyship, we make our voices heard! In addition to our Triple-A Town Hall Network for organization and mobilization, we participate in the New York Governor’s annual LGBTQ Convening and PFLAG’s Lobby Day, host rallies and events, and advocate for inclusive legislation and policies at the city and state level as often as possible.
