New York Name & Gender Marker Change Assistance Events
Presented by the PFLAG NYC Identity Project
PFLAG NYC is proud to partner with Advocates for Trans* Law Students (ATLS) on events designed to help parents learn more about and file name and/or gender marker change petitions in New York State. ATLS is the nation's first transgender law student advocacy group, aiming to provide support, community, and advocacy for TNBGNC students at Fordham Law School.
At these events, Fordham law students will be available to assist individuals in starting the process of self-filing their own or their child's name and/or gender marker change petitions, free of charge. ATLS will provide the form, a notary, and instructions for what to bring to court. While no legal advice is given or legal representation provided, the law students offer help and answer questions.
We also have copies of and information on NYC Public School Name and Gender Change Request forms, which allow students to change their name and/or gender on permanent school records without legal documentation.

Although registration isn't required to attend an event, completing the registration form will help us ensure we have sufficient materials. Click on an event to the right to access its registration form.
If you don't see any upcoming events on the calendar, that means we're in the process of scheduling our next one. You can check back on this page or subscribe to the PFLAG NYC newsletter for announcements about future events. Alternatively, ATLS hosts additional name change events throughout the year that are not affiliated with PFLAG NYC, which they announce on their social media.

Know Before You Go:
For adults who wish to get a name change and/or gender marker form notarized at an event: A valid (non-expired) photo ID will be required.
For parents who wish to get a name change and/or gender marker form notarized for a minor child at an event:
For two-parent families, both parents must attend the event with valid (non-expired) photo IDs to fully notarize the form. If both parents cannot attend, the attending parent's signature can be notarized at the event, but the other parent's signature will need to be notarized at a later date. Additionally, if the minor child is 14 or over, the minor child must be present to consent to the name change and sign the petition.
For single-parent families,
- If there is one custodial parent and the other parent's rights have been terminated, only the custodial parent must attend the event with a valid (non-expired) photo ID. Additionally, if the minor child is 14 or over, the minor child must be present to consent to the name change and sign the petition.
- If there is a living non-custodial parent, New York law requires that parent be notified and give consent. If this is your situation, the law students at the event can advise you of next steps, but the petition will not be able to be completed at the event.
