Support Group Facilitators

We have twelve online support groups designed to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of identities and communities. Groups are offered free of charge and led by volunteer facilitators who ensure that all of our attendees are supported and affirmed.

During meetings, facilitators welcome participants, share meeting guidelines and group norms, offer discussion topics, steer the conversation, and manage group dynamics.

Hours & time commitment: Support groups meet on nights and weekends, either once or twice per month, depending on the group. All meetings are 90 minutes. When possible, we assign co-facilitators to work together to lead meetings.

1-on-1 Support
Coaches

We offer individual coaching and goal setting to family members and other loved ones of LGBTQ+ people to help them move forward in accepting, understanding, and supporting the LGBTQ+ folks in their lives.

Coaches are matched with coachees based on each coachee's goals, schedule, and preferences. During sessions, coaches work with coachees to help them with areas where they feel stuck, bridge knowledge gaps, and provide resources.

Hours & time commitment: Coaches are assigned 1-2 coachees at a time, and the relationship with each coachee lasts approximately three months. Sessions may take place by Zoom, phone call, text, or email, depending on the coachee's preference, and are scheduled at times that work for both coach and coachee.

Safe Schools Program Speakers

The Safe Schools Program is an educational speaking and outreach initiative where PFLAG NYC staff and community speakers visit elementary, middle, and high schools to promote understanding, equality, and inclusion.

During school visits, we give an age-appropriate introduction about gender identity and sexual orientation, speakers share their personal and family stories, and staff members lead a classroom conversation and answer questions.

Hours & time commitment: School visits range from 3–5 hours and take place in person in NYC public schools, typically during school hours on weekdays. Once registered and trained, volunteers are notified about speaking opportunities and can sign up to speak at schools that are convenient for them.

If you're interested in sharing your story to make schools safer, click the button below to apply to be a Safe Schools Program speaker.
