Our Board of Directors invites you to the PFLAG NYC 2024 Gala for a night of celebration, recognition, and appreciation. This annual event raises crucial funds that directly advance our mission and the betterment of countless lives.
Launched in New York City in 1973 by mothers and fathers who stood up for their gay children, PFLAG NYC started a national movement that now has more than 250,000 members and supporters in over 500 chapters throughout the United States. Today, our mission remains the same… to create a better future for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) youth and adults through a partnership of parents, allies, and LGBTQ+ people. We’ve come a long way since 1973, but much work needs to be done to advance LGBTQ+ equality and create a safer and more inclusive society for all.
All proceeds will go towards furthering PFLAG NYC’s ongoing work to provide support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. We hope you’ll join us for this unforgettable night, and we appreciate your continued support of our mission.
We look forward to celebrating with you! Learn more about our honorees below, and stay tuned for information about entertainment.
OUR HONOREES
DR. RACHEL BLUEBOND-LANGNER & DR. LEE C. ZHAO
International leaders in surgical innovation and gender-affirming care
Dr. Rachel Bluebond-Langner (she/her) is a plastic surgeon and the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Associate Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. She aims to minimize the risks of surgery and have a positive, meaningful impact on a person’s quality of life. She was drawn to the field of plastic surgery because it uses creativity and artistry to restore form and function. Her goal is to work with each of her patients to achieve a natural aesthetic appearance while ensuring safety.
Dr. Rachel Bluebond-Langner works closely with a team of specialists, including urologists, mental health specialists, and pediatricians, to provide safe, gender-affirming procedures for transgender and nonbinary individuals. They strive to achieve an appearance and anatomy that is congruent with each person’s identity.
Dr. Rachel Bluebond-Langner’s team is at the forefront of innovation and research in gender-affirming procedures, conducting studies to improve safety, patient outcomes, and patient satisfaction. They aim to improve competent and overall healthcare for transgender and gender nonconforming people.
Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Lee C. Zhao (he/him) attended graduate school for biomedical engineering and volunteered in the Peace Corps. Combining his interest in fixing problems and his desire to help people was a natural fit. It led him to the field of urologic reconstructive surgery—a field that focuses on restoring a person’s quality of life.
His interest in reconstructive surgery led him to a fellowship in which he gained experience in performing hundreds of reconstructive procedures for repair of urethral strictures, urinary tract fistulas, ureteral injuries, and genital deformities. He also performed surgeries to restore erectile function and urinary continence. Many of these procedures focused on helping people who had previously had unsuccessful surgeries.
Since 2013, Dr. Lee C. Zhao has been practicing at NYU Langone, specializing in reconstructive surgery for reproductive organs and the urinary system.
