“You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!” and Other Myths: Laura Erickson-Schroth and Laura Jacobs Will Speak about Their New Book at PFLAG NYC

  • September 25, 2017

Join Us on October 8 and Help Challenge Myths about Trans People

From Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner to trans & queer youth, transgender and gender-nonconforming people are in the media more than ever before, but exposure does not necessarily lead to understanding. In fact, familiarity may help spread information that is incomplete and inaccurate. Come to a PFLAG NYC book talk to change that!

Laura Erickson-Schroth, M.D., and Laura A. Jacobs, LCSW-R, will speak at PFLAG NYC at 3 p.m. on October 8 about their new book, “You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!” — And 20 Other Myths and Misconceptions About Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming People.

Come hear them discuss a range of fallacies about being trans in the United States today. Bathroom issues grab headlines, but the book covers many other myths and misconceptions, like:

  • You’ve Never Met a Transgender Person
  • Trans People Are “Trapped in the Wrong Body”
  • All Trans People Want to Be Either Barbie or Ken
  • You’re Not Really Trans If You Haven’t Had “the Surgery”
  • Trans People are Mentally Ill and Therapy Can Change Them
  • Trans People Are a Danger to Others, Especially Children
  • Laws Support Trans People

The event is free and will take place at PFLAG NYC’s meeting in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday, October 8, at 3:00 p.m.

Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of She’s Not There and Long Black Veil, praised “You’re in the Wrong Bathroom,” calling it…

“A breath of fresh air. This book provides, with equal measures of scholarship and humanity, thoughtful pushback against the most common misconceptions, misunderstandings, and just plain lies about trans people and the people who love them. A book for everyone, You’re in the Wrong Bathroom will open hearts, change minds, and save lives.”

December 4 from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST Recurring

Loving Elders Support Group

The theme for this month will be "lead with the wisdom of your heart." Elders give children the promise of community, continuity, and consciousness of self. They are the spiritual guides that keep culture and personal history alive in the hearts of the young. They nurture the love and understanding that can then withstand the difficulties and appreciate the beauty of our shared walk through life. We love and cherish our grandchildren and may be the most accepting because so many unimportant things are of no concern to us anymore compared to our precious children. If you identify as a grandparent or an intergenerational influence in the life of an LGBTQ+ person join us for the launch of our Loving Elders Support Group. We’ll meet the first Monday of each month from 7:00 - 8:30 pm ET. Learn more and register.

Understanding Your LGBTQIA+ Child’s Nonbinary Identity with Dr. Hannah Ellerkamp

PFLAG NYC’s Support Services will provide two free virtual workshops with special guest and clinical psychologist, Dr. Hannah Ellerkamp. December's workshop will focus on understanding your LGBTQIA+ child’s nonbinary and identity exploration and how it impacts their life experiences including family, social and romantic relationships, education, and employment. Do you have a clear understanding of what nonbinary is? Does your child or loved one identify as nonbinary? You may have asked them but still have so many questions and want to be in a space with like-minded people who also have questions you aren’t even aware of or are willing to ask your loved one. Shifting outside of binary concepts, you will learn the differences between binary and nonbinary and understand how your loved ones’ lives are impacted by their identity and how you can support them. These workshops are good for parents, families, and caregivers of tweens, teens, and young adults (13+). Learn more and register.
