PFLAG NYC’s Support Services will provide a series of three free virtual workshops with special guest and clinical psychologist, Dr. Hannah Ellerkamp. This workshop series will focus on understanding the identities of LGBTQIA+ young people, including the intersection of neurodiversity and gender diversity, and how understanding how to communicate effectively can empower them as well as their parents and other folks in their lives. This workshop, the first in the series, will focus in particular on family acceptance of a loved one's gender identity and the best ways to come out to one's extended family. Understanding LGBTQIA+ Identities with Dr. Hannah Ellerkamp meets on the second Thursday of the month from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. ET. In order to keep a safe and confidential meeting space, you must register to attend PFLAG NYC meetings online. Parents/caregivers and families are undoubtedly concerned about their children’s safety and exposure to all types of relationships. If you are wondering how to navigate conversations around bodies, sex, intimacy, online safety and relationships with your 13+ tween, teen, and young adult lgbtqa+ loved one, we invite you to attend our virtual workshop. This is a mindful and important way to build your relationship and provide them with some life skills. We want to ensure that you can feel free to ask, share, and learn in a safe, non judgemental space so we ask that you attend the workshop without your child and that you’re in a location where you have privacy. PFLAG NYC’s Support Services will provide two free virtual workshops with special guest and clinical psychologist, Dr. Hannah Ellerkamp. December's workshop will focus on understanding your LGBTQIA+ child’s nonbinary and identity exploration and how it impacts their life experiences including family, social and romantic relationships, education, and employment. Do you have a clear understanding of what nonbinary is? Does your child or loved one identify as nonbinary? You may have asked them but still have so many questions and want to be in a space with like-minded people who also have questions you aren’t even aware of or are willing to ask your loved one. Shifting outside of binary concepts, you will learn the differences between binary and nonbinary and understand how your loved ones’ lives are impacted by their identity and how you can support them.
